Good Ol' Rice Crispy Treats

Sometimes I'm a bit homesick.  Not often, but I mean, I have been here in Australia for two years, so homesickness will come into play.  The other day I made PB cookies which reminded me of my mom's house.  Yesterday, I made No Bakes, also an oldie and goodie.  They may have reminded me of my ex-husband as he would make them all the time.  I refused to make them, I wasn't domesticated enough to make a no bake cookie.

Anyway, in my two years here in Australia, people are always asking me what are the differences between here and there.  I have the worst time answering that question.  NOTHING is different; yet everything at the same time.  My post today is a perfect example.  How many pink marshmallows can we get in the States?

Exactly, none.  So I have been very reluctant to try marshmallows here.  Not that I'm a massive huge fan, but every once in a while you need them for something.  Pink is hard for me to swallow and of course they don't taste the same.  Its gross.  You know those gross pink hard candies that you can buy?  I don't know what they're called but they taste a bit like licorice? Yeah, these taste like those.  Not.  Yummy.  Thus leaving the rice crispy treats pink:

I don't suppose that's a great picture.  But whatever, you get what I'm saying.  How can I raise a kid in a world in which rice crispy treats aren't even the proper color??  Yesterday I asked for an apron while we were talking about something else.  I think this domestication is getting out of my control.  A perfect example?  I've decided to make three desserts for tonight.  To show some self control, I've decided to make the brownies at a later date.  But good Lord!  What has become of me?

I can tell you.  No job.  With nothing else to do with my time, I have to keep my brain, hands and mouth busy.  This is the only other way to do it.  That and running.  haha-its to counteract the potential weight gain.

On another note, I love how the Australian's really care about where their food comes from.  Even with organic and free range food being about 30% more expensive, no matter who I've met they all purchase the more expensive stuff.  Its because people care that their chickens aren't barn kept.  People care that live export is inhumane.  It something I never ever thought about in the United States.  We think about so many other stupid mundane things.  And our media is fucked up at best.

Nevermind-I'm off track.  So this morning afternoon, I've lost track of time, I've made a childhood favorite of mine; Rice Crispy treats.  Also a first for me.  And let me tell you, NOT easy.  How do you get the marshmallows out of the pan mixed with the rice crispys and then into the pan it was a hot web of a mess.

Don't worry house mates: I've cleaned it all up.
